I have long had a fondness for painting. It was the medium that embodied my first love affair with art. For the first time in my life, I would have a reason to be staying up. I'd sit on my bedroom floor for hours, until I'd get too tired to get up and clean my brushes. It was pure romantic obsession, I was in love. This affair turned into a body of work, which then turned into a portfolio. The portfolio was the key to my acceptance at art school, a place that I had always vaguely considered, but was never a resolute destination in my mind. However doubtful I may have been about the benefits of such a specific curriculum in high school, once the doors had opened, I had no will but to enter.
Finally, I had an outlet. I had a raison d'etre. The first year of my new education was an often pleasing, never ending rotation of various media, so while I had to cheat on my first passion and work in 3-d or in etching, I could always come back to my first. But when my second year began, and my studies became even more focused, and painting seemed to just kind of fade out of the picture. I'd remind myself, set aside times, but it was never the same.
The other day, I had some free time, and the brush called to me again. Recently, I've been keeping a photo journal at MindlessCarbonation.tumblr.com. I've known for a while that I wan't to use the photos that I've been posting there in some way, but I wasn't sure how. Now, don't get too excited. I've never been to keen on making photo realism, and now didn't seem the time to start. I instead embarked on a project inspired by Color Collective. What I've always love about paint is the raw color of the paint straight out of the tubes, and the joy of mixing the exact hue you've been searching for, so I selected a few photos from the blog, and created color pallets from them. I hope you enjoy.
