In a conversation with some friends I once attempted to make a comparison between lyrical vocals in music and human faces in visual art. I felt (and feel for that matter) that human presence drastically alters the nature of an image. I listen to a fair amount of instrumental music, and I've always found that for many people the presence or absence of vocals is a big dividing line. The human voice moves to the forefront, lyrics become focus of the listener. Now, the art this comparison only really works correctly if were talking about more traditional forms of art, but please make that jump with me while I attempt to explain. If one were to paint a landscape, the viewer would be able to focus on the surroundings and the ideally freely move around the details of the image. If a human were to be added to the painting/photograph/etc. he or she would instantly become the focus of the picture.
As we've been going through all of our fashion week pictures, I've been thinking about how I've been taking a disproportionate amount of pictures of people recently. I am much more accustomed to the inanimate subject. I walk around and take pictures of stuff, not people really. This isn't to say that I don't enjoy the human as subject, just that it is a strange place for me to explore.
To stick my head above water and get a breath of clear air for a second I thought I'd go through the images in Adrianaah's photostream. While not entirely devoid of people, there is a sizable selection of the more still, calm images of immobile settings that I am accustomed to. Alright, this break is over. Back to fashion week!
